'96 Quattro only drives in 2nd gear?!....
lol. how do you know?
This has been an interesting thread, it's like an adventure.
,anyways I just bought an Audi my self has 270,000 miles or so on it, and i'm hoping I don't have to go through all this but just encase, I hope to read the result. Great job everyone.
while we are on this subject I have been reading up on audi and stuff, and I seen Wikipedia.com and it stat a 5 speed manual, 4 speed Auto, and 5 Speed Auto, now the question I have is anyone know if that the 5 speed auto is the tiptronic cause I didn't see the plus and negative label on the shifter for a manual shifting but it does read D432 on the shifter, so I'm guessing it's a 5 speed unless it's 4 speed with Over drive? If I can get some professional help that would be great. Thanks ahead of time.

After playing phone tag w/ my mechanic for several weeks, I finally gave up and found another guy. He actually spent a fair bit of time diagnosing and came to the conclusion that the solenoid's not the problem. He said he'd gladly take my $400 and put one in, but it wouldn't fix the problem.
He's 100% sure that it's a clutch in the tranny. He was convinced by the muffled, high pitched 'zoom' that follows when slipping into 'D' from stopped. Approx. $1300 to replace the tranny w/ a rebuilt one or around the same amount to do a mechanical repair. Funny thing too, a buddy's buddy has the exact same problem w/ the exact same car.
So, I think I'm sold on the issue now. It took a while, but thanks to the 1st mechanic avoiding my calls for 3 weeks, I think I saved $400-500.
Now the question is, do I drive it as is til the tranny totally craps out?

Yea, I think that's the plan. Between the thermostat, the tranny and the glitchy climate control, I'm looking at $3000 + to get her back into shape. And I'm sure there's other issues that'll be popping up soon.
Even with the relatively low mileage (98k) I'm wondering if it's worth the repairs. I do love the way she looks at me sometimes, but considering that in top shape, she's only worth around $6000, I'm not sure if she's a keeper.
Anyone think it's worth the effort?

I wouldnt think its worth even $6k... where'd you get that from?
I paid $2k for my '96 with 130k miles last Feb... No service records, though, and needed struts.. otherwise runs great and looks good.
Figure that KBB is always alittle high: http://www.kbb.com/kbb/UsedCars/Pric...uizConditions=

So, my mechanic got a brand new tranny from vw for my '96 A4. Installed, it only came to $1500. Plus another $500 to fix the A/C.
I made a mistake sending my dad to pick it up from the shop though. He should of turned around and taken it back, because now the brakes are acting funky.
It's a loud and intense thumping whenever the brake is applied. And the pedal almost resists in a steady thumping pattern, which corresponds with whatever speed I'm traveling when I apply the brake.
Of course, I'll be going back Monday to get this dealt with. But it'd be nice to know in advance what they messed up and how, so they don't get away with blaming the car.
Any ideas are much appreciated as always!
