97 A4 engine swap
Does anyone know how many hours swapping a 1.8t in a Quattro books out at. I supplied a replacement engine to my local mech. and he is doing the swap but he has been at it for a long time. So how long should this job take flat rate?

I'm not sure what the book time is, but it should definitely take less than 5 hours, and even less than that if its swapping longblock for longblock (no head removal or swaps). I can see him charging for up to about 8 hours though.
Where are you located and what failed? I might be interested in some of the old parts.

As I read your post I got more of the impression you were looking for a lenght of time it should take to do a swap and not necessarily how much it should cost. With out knowing how much he's charging you or how long a "long time" is actually it would be hard to tell you. So I would just say a prepared shop should be able to do this in a day with a second day to test it fully and make sure there's no problems. Now if you're getting an incredible price or maybe you said something like "take your time I have another car to drive" then you should expect he's really going to take his time because Audi's aren't really that fun to work on when you're in the business of repairing cars.
I had the local mechanic do the swap. This was the first one that they had done. They had my car on their lift for 2 weeks and they have only one lift. It did look like more work than a simple swap. The Intercooler had oil in it and the radiator had oil in it so they had to clean out both of them. The engine that I got was from a 98 Passat and even though he said he looked them both over to make sure they were the same he found some things were different. The engine came complete with the wiring harness still connected and the ends that plug into the ecu had the same colors BUT they were not the same. He didn't realize this till after the engine was in the car. He did break the alternator when he removed it too. It seemed like he did alot of things twice. The final cost including the couple hours he spent diagnosing it when it first came in pulling the pan and timing chain cover and inspecting the replacement engine, and the engine I supplied was $2500. So does this price sound reasonable?

How much did you pay for the engine? Why would he bother using the wiring harness that the engine came with if you already had yours in your car? Thats just a big waste of time, and all the sensors would match up anyway. Cleaning out the intercooler is another waste of time unless it was virtually filled with oil, which it wasnt. And why was there oil in your radiator???? What was the cause of the old engine to fail, or need replacing? You never answered me before, I might be intersted in some of the old parts.
Really? Did you see the Intercooler because I did and I don't like being called out as a liar. I'll toss the old engine in the scrap heap before I sell any part to you.
Who called you a liar?? Obviously I didn't see the intercooler, but the car wouldn't run if it had as much as you say. No reason for you to be an ******* to me, I was just answering your questions and helping you. Welcome to AF ya **********.
