97 A4 V6 keeps overheating...HELP!!
I run the car up to 3/4 of the way to an overheat, then shut it down. The overheat happens because air bubbles circulating in the system get trapped behind the thermostat and keep it from opening (which is why your lower hose is cool). Once it cools down enough, slowly open the overflow cap to break the system pressure. The t-stat pops, the bubbles flow through, up, and burp out the overflow. Top off the tank with warm water, put the cap back on, and repeat a couple times. At that point you'll be likely good to go but keep water in the car a few days and watch the gauge - a bubble can get trapped and work free over the next few days. If so, just do the above. Otherwise, you're good.
Did you try to bleed the air from the system using the bleed holes on the block? There is a bleeder hole for the heater core under the passenger side heater hose. There are two more bleeder holes on the block; one on the firewall side of the driver's side head, another one below the power steering pump.
Hopefully I got it. I pulled the hoses off the heater core and flushed the hoses and the heater core with a garden hose. I have heat now and its not overheating, hopefully it stays that way. Thank you everyone for your help..... Im sure this wont be my last question on here. Now I have to look up changing radio questions.
