Depends on what you mean. If you mean a cone filter on a stick(tube), without a box, that's a hot-air-intake. This is why a lot of owners swap out the filter in the stock box. Making your own custom box isn't as easy and obviously cost more. Some of the more hardcore 30v guys replace the accordian tube and elbow with silicone as it's smooth and it insulates from heat.

If you want carb legal, then just swap a K&N. It does flow more cfm than the stock Audi filter (by a little), but they don't filter as well.

It's going to depend on what your goals are.

Nice job on that abnormal.

Audi_b5, abnormal's intake will sound nicer for sure. If you had time I'd build a box around it or just heat sheilding sealed to the hood and engine bay with weather stripping or similar.

Some of the cone filters have a bell mouth/velocity stack shape near the adapter to the tube, which can reduce turbulence and therefore increase intake speed. People with the stock airbox can do this by putting a velocity stack near the filter box outlet, which does the same thing, but this also allows you to de-screen the maf, which makes a nice difference.

I tried a hot air deal with no MAF (pre-'99) and honestly it's mostly a sound thing in my experience. The stock A4 intake is actually super efficient for a factory deal. Nice setup though!

yea ive been wanting an intake for my car since ive owned it... even more after hearing my dads chevy colorado after i installed an AEM intake on his truck and it sounds mean!
But i want something California emissions legal since I dont want to have to worry about cops pulling me over and giving me a ticket since this state laws blow! haha
I was wondering if n e one had heard or found an intake I could use
