Anybody know how many splines there are supposed to be on the front axles of a '98 A4 Quattro with the 30v 2.8L V6 manual trans? I'm finding parts numbers for 2 different possibilities: 33 splines and 38 splines? Were there two different sizes in this year model car? Do I need to to remove one of my old axles and count the splines to be sure or is there some way to determine the number from other info such as VIN number or option codes in the owners manual? My car has the "1BE" Sport Suspension option code if that matters.

 

Ordered new axles and new hubs both with 38 splines and 82mm bearings so that way everything is a known fit. After doing some research, it appears that the mix-matched axle/hub/spline sizes are only reported on some 2000-2001 4-cyl models and all the V6 B5 models had 38 splines.
