Default 99 A4- Whats a Catalytic Converter going to cost me??

Last night I started to accelerate up a hill and I hit 6000 RPMs and all of the sudden my car started to sound like a lawnmover. When I accelerate it makes the loudest most obnoxious "old beater" sounding noise I've ever heard. Anyway, I took it in to the shop and my guy seems to think it may be the Catalytic Converter. Any other opinions as to what it could be. I was thinking the Turbo? And... any idea on what it may all cost? Please help!!!

it should cost you a couple of 100$$ if you get it from the stealership. Try some junkyards it will cost less.

Idont know. But it could be only a gasket that are bad not the entire catalytic converter.

just go to the junkyard and tell them what you need. They will get the part for you if they have it.

Never buy a used catalytic converter. U may save some money but there are no gurantees that it's guna last you all that long. I used to work at an exhaust shop and we used to have people come in all the time and ask for used cats. And well... The only reason people have em taken off is cause they are no good. And then the next thing you have to think about is, why your converter is bad (if thats the case) most the time it's cause your running way to rich, and sometimes it's just cause you bottomed out one to many times and it broke up inside and is blocking the exhaust way. Most people who came in and had a bad converter, had problems excelerating, or even getting their vehicle up over 50mph. But sometimes it's also just a bad sensor else where. But ur best bet if it is a bad converter, go to a ma and pa shop and have them put it on. THey will save u some bucks. Also wouldn't he be able to just put in a test pipe instead. See that's one of the things I dont really know about these cars. Cause I Know some cars if you get rid of the converter it kicks on that damn check engine light. is that the case for audis too? Well whatever the case hopefully it doesn't cost you a bundle. Good luck

A new cat will cost u at least 2-250 and most of them cost 300 but wut i did when my flange rusted off mine is i just bought the $100 test pipe off of ebay and put that in which saved me a couple hundred and also a little performance. But its your call if u want the new cat or the TP but i'd go with the TP since they don't really ever test for emissions where i live.
