Sounds like a crankshaft position sensor. Could also be fuel pump going. Can you hear it prime when you turn the key on?

Default A4 1.8 T starting problems

hi intercepter, when engine eventually does start there is a strong smell of petrol, so i would guess that the fuel pump is fine. i look at the sensor, but ant more suggestions, thx

I would also try and get your fuel pressure checked when cranking. So really try and take it in. To me though sounds either to be the crank sensor or a fuel problem.
