a4 2.8 differences between 12V & 30V

What is the difference between the two. Is the performance effected either way? What about gas milage and reliability?

30v is faster and can support serious mods. 12v just plain sucks balls

150hp in the 12v, 190hp in the 30v. Both very reliable but the 96-96 12v is getting up there in age. I've heard a few audi mechanics say that the 98 year A4 is the most reliable year. They're both gas guzzlers, 30v more so. If your thinking of upgrading power the options are limited to NOS and a supercharger for 30v.

LOL as well. The 12v has been around a long time and is a workhorse motor for Audi. It's not particularly powerful or technological but simplicity can be its own benefit. Chances are it's likely to be easier to work on than the 30v for one thing, although it's down about 20hp from the 30v and has virtually no aftermarket mod potential. Both engines get decent around-town mileage (lower to middle 20s) and good highway (30+ mpg). They're good engines, but not as tuner-friendly as the 1.8T.

I found this on audi world
97 0-60- 7.8 seconds (9.6 auto)
98 0-60- 7.1 seconds (8.8 auto)

ok so that shows the 20 hp difference

So what mods can the 97 support and what can the 98 support?
