Default About to buy a 1999 a4 1.8t - help!

i was involved in an accident and sadly my m3 is gone

now im looking into this 99 1.8t

i was wondering what i should look for when i go check out the car

i.e.- mechanical issues at +100k miles

the car has about 101k miles and it looks like from the add that he has not changed belts recently.

any help will be great

thank you

p.s. he is asking $4900 for the car

Ask about the timing belt and if he claims to have had it replaced, ask for receipts. Mine was replaced before I bought the car so I don't have to worry about it.

That is a really good price as long as body is in good shape and no huge tranny problem. Is it a 5speed? Quattro? Have you driven it? Main things check shifting/ turn steering all the way each way ( May be a little sticky thats common)/ Def ask bout timing belt ( if not changed still buy it but get it changed asap)/ acceleration should seem effortless to make sure turbo system is ok...

150hp trying to tugg along a 3200(?) pound car = effortless acceleration? HA!

For that price, as long as it drives ok and there arent puddles of leakage under it, jump on it! Even if something is wrong youll have a hard time negotiating the price since it's already priced well bellow value. Records are a plus. If no timing belt records just assume it hasn't been done. Other than that, enlighten yourself by reading the A4 Newbie Guide sticky.

Yes effortless acceleration! I have driven a few 1.8t's including my own. You can EASILY feel the turbo pullin you along! When you are not gettin any turbo you can feel that lil engine struggle like its a civic towing a boat! Now your just tryin to "sass" me back huh onepoint?!

go take a ride in an S4, or a mustang, or 350z, or evo, etc. then come back and say a stock 1.8t isnt slow. i guess you can feel the difference if your getting boost or not, but the car is realisticly no where near fast unless your putting a big *** turbo in there. quality is mostly the name of the game if your getting an audi, the quattro drivetrain is second to none. however the car will pull away from 90% of the beaters out there on the road. and you will look good doing it.
