ABS problems
Ok,
I've search for many nights, and yet, i still haven't found a direct solution to my problem.
Don't bash my because of my question and low post count!
So the car is a 1999 A4 1.8T with about 220k
For the last year i have been having this anoying ABS issue, i decided to pull the abs fuse. Since now the lady is driving the car i want to solve this issue once for all.
When decelerating just before a stop the abs activate for no reason about 20 feet before a stop, doesn't mather if it is on snow, asphalt, gravel. If i decelerate slowly and barely touch the brake the abs will active. I used to have the abs light on, but know that i have reinstalled the fuse and got the computer reset, the abs checked and rechecked by a garage with proper computers to check everything, the abs still does have the problem and i have no light on the dash.
all this started after a wheel bearing was done. Now after search and speaking to a few people, everything seems to point to a reinstallation error during bearing replacement. the dented wheel where the abs reads wheel spin would be wrongly installed and causing this.
The guy that hooked up my car told me that that he cannot tell which corner is at fault. And i do not remember (when the problem started) which wheel bearing they replaced (i've change so many).
Now the question is, does this reinstallation error makes sense, IS IT the problem for sure? or something else could be causing this?
If it is about certain that part was wrongly installed, anyone has a scheme to show axle assembly so i can bring this to the garage and show them there screw up and how to install it CORRECTLY?
I seriously need this fix, or i'm going to have to remove the fuse and give the lady brake technic course.
Thank all i'm sure you gurus know the fix!

i have the same problem. do you have a light on for the abs for reasons other than the pulled fuse? if not, one of the abs sensors are dirty. gently try to take any of them out that will budge. otherwise you'll need to buy 4 new ones to replace. they all have the same harness for the front and back so you won't need to worry about that. the wires for the rear is longer than the ones in the front. also the harness is under the rear seats for the rears. the harness for the front is in the wheel well, just follow the wire.
Since the abs sensor had to be removed to remove the hub/wheel bearing then I'd guess its that abs sensor. I had the same problem with my 97.. ABS randomly activating at very low speeds, slowing the car to a near stop and then letting go. It could be a break in the sensor wire, or the sensor itself. If the mechanic knows what he's doing he should be able to test it with a multimeter as he spins the wheel at different points along the circuit.

No light at all currently on, and the problem is happening....

Not really. It's just a small cylinder that slides into a hole... At 200K+ miles things get crispy and could easily break on reinstallation no matter how careful you are. Especially wires that are exposed to the outside and go through thousands of hot/cold cycles. I really wouldn't try to point the blame to them even though it may have happend during reinstallation.

EDIT: also does the ring that the sensor read on is a piece that can be removed off the axle? or is it part of the axle.

no i haven't fixed mine yet but somebody else on here had the exact same series of events we went through and that's how he fixed it. hooking up the computer didn't say which corner it was. it's rly not the shops fault. i had mine done at the dealership and they still messed it up.
If you are talking about the rear wheels on a fwd a4, then yeah, there is an abs ring that is pressed into the rotors that comes off. Otherwise the abs sensor reads from directly from the axle where it goes into the hub. One would hope that pinpointing a bad abs sensor would be as easy as a scan or simple button press, but it's not always that easy.

thanks i will have all 4 sensor checked.
