Default Advise on wheel bearings

Hi guys about 3 weeks ago I got this 96' B5 2.8L and today got to work fine when I left to go home I heard some metal to metal noise coming from the rear I drove home 19 miles and it got louder ,after that I got on the car again to take my daughter to the doctor another 3 miles and it got real loud and started moving sideways a bit almost the feel if you were driving with a loose rim ,jack it lugs are good but the rim is loose moving in and out in one piece turn the rim and you can hear metal to metal grind and the feel like if the brake was on a bit ,got back home and it was smoking (rear driver side rim) smells like burning brake I look and the metal bracket that holds the brake pad is rubbing against the rotor fuc...the rotor up ....
So what am I looking up?? wheel bearing + rotor and pads ?? bearings should be change in pairs ? any tips on how to do the job ,advise , heads up ..or tools needed ..this is my first Audi Im used to work on Land Rovers ..Thanks .

wow....if anything metal is ON the rotor and was rotating like that I would try to have the rotor turned or replace it altogether, it'll probably be best to replace the rotor and pads. That should resolve the "metal to metal noise coming from the rear"

I replaced front bearings as a pair. I look at it like tires, you wouldn't just replace on right? At least replace the 2 where needed.

Rotors and pads are one of the easiest jobs to do. You just need a couple sockets, a ratchet and I believe a hex key? for the pads. You should be able to do front and rear brakes in an hour or two.

Bearing are a little more complicated....

Sounds like you have it figured... You dont need to change the bearings in pairs, but it also doesnt hurt.

You are going to have to pull the wheel and hub off to get the full survey of the damage. If the bearings were smoking your are gonna want to inspect and make sure that the hub and spindle themselves were not damaged, otherwise you would want to replace them. so bearings+rotors+pads is what I would say you need. I think the FWD bearings cost a lot less than the quattro ones, so you wont be out too much $$ but you will also want to replace the seals that go with the bearings.

I had something that sounds just like what you're talking about and it cost me $918 (I couldn't diy it). the metal to metal noise I was getting was from my rotor being pushed into the brake cover, it also forced the pads to touch and turned the abs light on. my whole driveshaft, cv joint, wheel bearing, rotor and brake sensor needed to be replaced. good luck.
