it still overheats with the heater running but keeping the heat on and up helps it cool down a bit. I also found out that the electrical fan should come on if the engine starts overheating like I thought it should. mine only goes on when the ac is on and it's too cold here to have ac on.. I also found out my coolant reservoir has scratches on it and when there's enough pressure, coolant will start squirting out...

so I checked to see if I had any codes even though I don't have a cel, which I meant to do before buying the car but forgot, and I found out that I have three codes
first code is P0117 - "engine coolant temp circuit low input". I'm hoping this is the only cause of the overheating coolant..
P0313 - "cylinder 3 misfire detected". this sounds bad and I'm hoping it's just a coil pack. I switched the 2nd and 3rd coil packs to see if I'll get a "cylinder 2 misfire" instead. I also noticed that the 3rd coil pack has been replaced, or at least looks different than the other three. the font on it is a little bigger. I'm not really sure what this means. it's weird that I'd get a misfiring cylinder but the car is running not like ****..
p0442 - "EVAP emission control system leak (small)". I don't really know much about this but my gas cap is screwed in and clicked a few times so that's not the problem unless its a faulty cap or something. I can try switching caps..

anyone have any advice? especially with the p0117 code or anything else about overheating..?
this was not supposed to be a project car

noo not yet

I guess what I'll try to do is replace the coolant temp sensor first. this is the four pin blue sensor behind the engine on the top? I kind of doubt that will be the cause of overheating so then replace the thermostat (also behind the engine on top?) and if that doesn't work, replace the water pump.. I would think I shouldn't have any pressure in the reservoir if the pump wasn't working though.. are there any easier ways to find out if these things are bad without replacing them or anything different I should do?

sounds like you just need to change your coolent sensor! the 1.8t are known for bad coolents sensors its all the way in the back no big deal https://www.audiforums.com/forum/diy-do-yourself-55/r-r-coolant-sensor-switch-imolas4-8016/

everyone wants my number
yeah I found this http://www.audiworld.com/tech/eng47.shtml
I guess I'll order the sensor and hopefully be able to install it next weekend.. ecs sells it for pretty cheap and I think I'll also pick up a hood bra to cover my little dent while they're still on a huge sale.. not really sure if I'll like the look of that better than my dent. guess I'll be borrowing a parent's car again for school this week I shoulda just gotten a honda.

also does anyone know if this will fit our cars?

That coolant tank should fit our cars.
And dont bra it man! Bras have no place in a man's world! Not on cars, not on women!
Roll with the dent, if people give you ****, say its for aero. Thats what I'm doing. I got my three diffusers, they route air to the channels over the roof, giving me 10 extra pounds of downforce!

Oh, you'll probably dig this Aledelic, I finally sourced a BRAND NEW 555 fairing!
Here's the thing, it was made in a batch of about 5, some guy with acess to a CNC or whatever cut them out to the exact specs. Fits the roof perfect, and it has no thule logo, so I think I'm gonna put up a DOPE sticker.
$50 picked up today! Whoo whoop!

I ordered the bra from ecs. it's actually a two piece front end cover to fit over the hood and front bumper but I wouldn't use the bumper piece.. it was on sale for $27 from an original price of like $118 or something so maybe I could flip it if I don't like. same as this one..

good stuff with the fairing, do you even have racks though?

are you sure that coolant tank will fit? it looks similar but it says it's for a b6
