Hello Everyone,

i am currently having a problem with my 2000 a4 1.8t non Quattro.
i will start from the beginning on how things went down.

about 2 months ago i started feeling a slight misfire and loss of power then i got a few CELs (Fuel Trim: Bank 1 : System too Rich)
and Code P0102 Mass Air Flow (MAF) Circuit Low Input.

thinking that the rich code was because of the MAF sensor i decided to change it.

hooked up my obd2 scanner and cleared the codes.

It ran fine for about a day and then i started to feel a slight misfire again and got more codes
this time i got codes for (Fuel Trim: Bank 1 : System too Lean!),
a code for (random misfire on all cylinders)
and again the P0102 (Mass Air Flow (MAF) Circuit Low Input)

the next day i was driving my car to work and bam. it started misfiring really bad. i looked for vacuum leaks and could not find any. i tried changing the plugs to see if it would help but it didn't. i also tried resetting the ecu but nothing happened

today i unplugged the maf sensor and like magic it started running good again.

i then went home and plugged the MAF back in and it started misfiring.

so today i went and got ANOTHER new MAF and threw it in.
now the car will idle just fine but will not go over 1100 rpms without
giving me codes for random/multiple misfire

i was wondering if you guys have any suggestions
im pretty sure its not a spark or coil pack issue because it will run fine without
the MAF it just runs rich and i get bad MPG

 

autozone maf sensor is a pos go oem

 

isnt Bosch oem?
the new and old MAFs
look identical and are both Bosch

 

when you took the spark plugs out, how did they look like?

 

they looked normal. so im pretty sure its not a spark plug problem.

what are your plugs gapped at? Do you have a friend that you can swap out coilpacks just to rule that out. Go to ecstuning.com and get a maf from them. They are legit.

 

im using the gapless triple electrode plugs. thats what ive always used in my a4 ever since i got it and never had a problem with them. i even threw in a new pair today just to make sure that wasnt the issue. as for coil packs i dont think thats the issue but ill try it in a few minutes i have a few spares laying around.
Also i read the MAF sensor with my OBD2 scanner and it is reading properly thats why im so confused. i have no clue what to do now
**UPDATE** It is not a coilpack issue i swapped them out and it didnt change a thing

 

the only other thing I could think of is maybe it's fuel. Have you cleaned out injectors, changed fuel filter. Maybe even seafoam... I had this same problem. I ended up using ngk plugs, new coils, new maf, seafoam, fuel filter, and finally erased codes. I don't know which fixed it but I figured it be good to do all that anyway. Have you tried resetting your TB.
