Question Audi FOB Key

Hey guys

I have had my 2001 2.8 for 4 months now and it only came with one remote flip key . I opened up my key to find out what codes I have but I was wondering about how to get a new one. I also heard that you have to have 2 keys to program a third yourself, but if you only have 1 like I do, then you have to take it to the dealer, but I dont know if that is true or not. I'm sure someone has a thread somewhere about buying new keys but I cant find one, so just help me out...

Which Key will work for my car, and does the new key have to have the exact same codes?

Do I have to take my car to the dealer to get a new one programmed because I only have 1 key?

Also, is there any good sites with cheap prices other than eBay for buying new audi flip keys?

I dont plan on losing my one-and-only key but if I do, I want to be able to have a spare remote just in case.

Thanks in advance guys

that thread is pretty good, a little bit confusing.

most of those guys are talking about programming a third remote, which is very easy, but for me I need a second so i am still wondering how to get one.

Do I have to take my car into the dealership to get a second one programmed, or can I just get an uncut remote on eBay with matching codes that will work? And how do I program a second remote FOB?

Also, is the last letter on the FCC # the color code of your car? Does that last letter matter? I have a D which is silver, and I cant find another D on eBay or anywhere else.

Thanks and more input would be great on this....

Audi sends you pre-cut key (about 180 dollars for the switchblade key) using the serial number on your car.

Some early 2001's did not have the immobilizer system. I just got a key (no remote ) from Audi dealer for $67. All you need to do is provide ownership proof.
If you don't have immoblizer you don't need to program the key.

I thought all US B5's came without immobillisers?

Or are we referring to coding the key for OEM remote central locking?
