bad things happen to mr. clutchy...

so im driving home and am shifting petty quick from first to second and the clutch pedal goes soft. It went into second gear but after that i couldnt get it out of gear or into another. after i stopper i got the car in neutral and I couldnt select another gear. the stick just wouldnt go and the car seemed to want to move forward when i was trying to select a gear even with the clutch pedal all the way in (mind you it has regained feeling at this point). after shutting the car off, i can select a gear, start it up and move, but not shift. luckily i was able to limp it home as i was only a mile a way in third gear. question: what happened? my thoughts are either throwout bearing, slave cylinder, or needs a new clutch altogether. the clutch holds fine when in gear, but i just cant shift. the stick is locked until the car shuts off. help is greatly appreciated.

if you cant tell from the photo, which you should cause you like audis, its a 01 1.8tqm

This exact thing happened to Meloman recently - his throwout bearing was bad.

for future reference its was the pressure plate. its was literally in four pieces. really surprised the car still moved. had an ecs tuning clutch kit installed and its back on the road
