do you hear the noise from listening in the hood, or in the passenger compartment?

Is it just the ventalation system pressurizing (for lack of a better term), or is it compressor related?

You can fire up the ventilation system and leave the compressor off - I think you press the 'econ' button that is sort of near the temp. controls.
