Default Calling on Quattro owners - MPG question

I'm looking at buying a 1999 A4 Quattro 1.8T, automatic tranny, 120K miles. Paint and body are in great shape, and the interior looks brand new.

The owner says he gets "about 30" MPG, but my coworker has a 1999 A4 FWD 5 speed 1.8T and says that he gets "about 32" on the highway.

What realistically, should I expect the MPG to be on a completely stock A4 Quattro 1.8T with automatic transmission? Obviously it depends on me, the driver...but let's just say for an average driver. I'm not gonna be hot rodding it because it will be my primary transportation.

Thanks!

yea i get about 20-22 city, driving pretty hard and mid 20s on the highway crusing at 4k rpms. if i really wanted to stretch my gas (and slow down) high 20s would be possible. over 30 is somewhat unrealistic although a few people claim to get it.

Bummer...I think that may change my mind.

Pardon my ignorance...is the 5spd auto tranny the "Tip-Tronic" tranny?

well i have weird work hours (like starting at 3am and ending at 10am) a lot so i dont ever have any traffic to deal with

and i work 25 miles from my place (half hour purely interstate with 70mph limit) and i just leave 5 mins earlier than i need to and go about 64 and i get 400 miles on a tank (when the majority of the miles i put on is going to work and back)

but when im going around town i usualy still get 375 miles on a tank and i usually dont drive very conservitavely ha

the turbo only kicks in a nd sucks gas when your accelerating over 3500k rpm or so so just shift quickly and dont smash the throttle and you should get around 30 no problem!

(just like the guy claims)

i didnt really think that it would get as good as it does... im curious as to what the most anyone has every gotten on one tank?!?!

Flynn,

Thanks for the info. That makes me feel a little better. I'm sure I can find this online somewhere, but how big is the tank in a '99 A4 Quattro?

Are you running 93 octane or what?

After re-gapping my spark plugs and fixing my vac leak I get 21.7 city and 30.2 highway (real mpg's, not car guestimates). That's when I drive conservative, which is most of the time, I went 4 weeks without knowing that my chip went back to stock mode after a battery unplug.

Ghost: there's gotta be something wrong with your car if you only have a couple mpg's difference between hard city driving and highway crusing. And if you're cruising at 4000rpms you're either going 95 the whole time or need to shift to 5th

Btw: my 2.7 was most efficient at 73mph (30.6mpg) for some reason. I don't know what's the most efficient mph range in the A4 yet.
