Default Cam Tensioner

Would broken cam tensioner pads cause misfires? and idling issues?

I could see it happening but there would probably be some codes along with it like cam position codes

One of mine was broken and I had no idea until I was doing valve cover gaskets. The pad was completely gone and it was running on the metal piece the pad goes on. I didn't have any misfire codes.

well that's kinda disappointing lol. I thought maybe scene it not have the right amount of tension it might cause a misfire....and everything else as far as firing checks out good. plugs, wires, coil, could it possibly be out of time?

Of course. Did you do the last timing belt job? If this is the V6 and the last guy didn't use the timing tool, it could easily be out of time.

I hate to say it, but when you've exhausted all the easy stuff, the other possibility is a compression problem...

Matt,

I just noticed that you are also the guy posting about a B5 with blue smoke out the exhaust. So you have misfires codes, a broken PCV system and lots of blue smoke from a car you've had for 1 month?

1. I hope the seller told you about all of this. He knew.
2. It's very hard for all of us to guess at what might be going on. I have the feeling there are several problems: not just one.
3. You need to VAG-COM this car. If you can't borrow one, pay someone who has one to diagnose all that's going on here. We're all just guessing and that tends to lead to people throwing expensive parts at a car. You need to know where you are.
