Default Cant select gear?? need help asap

Hey what sup guys. I got a 98 2.8 quattro. 5spd

I was driving home last night like normal. put the car in 5th gear then a few seconds after, car makes a VERY loud bang and clunk. Like i hit something with the undercarraige.

Well right after that i noticed that when i press the gas the car actually doesnt move anymore. The engine stayed on. but i can put the shifter in any position and it does not engauge anything. The speedo will rise with the shifter in a gear but the car wont move.

My driveshaft is there, all axles are there. lol.

What could i have broke? also the car goes into any gear with the motor on without needing to press the clutch in.

Please help me out guys and also, if it is my tranny is there a write for doing it on the quattro.

Or you think i can get the tranny rebuilt.

how does the speedo rise and the car not move? the speed sensors are in the hub which means the wheel has to move in order for the speedo to move up. i think you're talking about the tach. you probably either broken the shifter linkage or your clutch assembly is toast.

no. car can stay idling. The speed sensor works off the gear in the transmission.

And i mean the speedo. The car is fully running. and i can hit 50-60mph on the SPEEDO.

I know what im looking at. rpms rise as well. Its not a timing belt because the engine is fully running. Even if it was a timing belt that has nothing to do with the car not moving

But any other input guys???
