water in engine oil

Default water in engine oil

It never ends....

Pulled the stick on my 1.8T yesterday and much to my horror observed the telltale patches of white goo...checked under the oil fill cap and sure enough white goo there as well...So what do you think....headgasket??? Oil cooler??? or both??? With only 74,000 on a 03 this almost made me get out the sledge hammer...I guess it will be a waist of time trying to go to Audi for a warranty issue under this class action settlement...

Any thoughts will be greatly appreciated...

I'd start with a compression test and go from there.

sometimes it just condensation over a long period of time. it's from the imperfect seal of the piston rings. wipe it off and see if it comes back in a week. if not you're fine. if there was water in the oil, you'd see the coolant color change in the reservoir

Its more likely the oil cooler than a Headgasket. In fact most untrained mechanics will incorrectly diagnose the failing cooler and say its the HG.

Thanks for the advise guys ...the coolers a lot easier to change than the head gasket......

I believe I've nailed my oil leak down to the oil cooler. I should be good just changing the gasket right? I don't have any mixing of fluids.

Is the replacement as straightforward as it appears?

I had a similar problem about a month ago, only my problem was the other way around. There was oil in my coolant.

Like you, I was devastated suspecting a blown head gasket but after following the advice of the fine people on this forum I went out and bought an oil cooler (for $8) replaced it in half an hour and bingo bango problem solved.

It also stopped my oil leak problem which I and others suspected a rear main seal leak.

Killed 2 birds with one stone for $8

Try changing the oil cooler it doesn't cost much and you might save yourself alot of time, money and braincells.
