If you changed out the whole assembly, you will probably need to reprogram the fob itself with VAG-COM or at a dealer.

I'm about to change mine out today or tomorrow.

Are you sure this is going to be necessary?

I'm about 90% sure. I'm pretty sure this has been covered in a few threads. A focused search in the B5 sub forum should find the exact answer you're looking for.

If you simply replaced just the pump itself, and left the electronics in place, the fob should re-sync on it's own after a day or two.

Unfortunately, my problem isn't the pump. It's the RF receiver.

I was driving like an ******* in the deep *** waters of a Florida "surprise" thunderstorm, w/o knowing that Audi put the CLU in the worst possible spot ever.

Now I'm about to find out whether or not a different one will work (assuming I bought a legit-working replacement).

I'll keep you guys posted, as I'll be doing it today.

No luck.

Will a registered version of VCDS Lite be able to do it?

UPDATE:

You can accomplish this with VCDS Lite (free).

I just did mine and after lots of burned out brain cells, I've got it working great.

D/L VCDS Lite here: Ross-Tech: VCDS-Lite: Download

Check #35 Here: Ross-Tech: VAG-COM: Audi B5 VAG-COM Info

This is the procedure for VIN code "8D" (my car), but they have all models also:

Good Luck w/everything. Let me know if I can help further.

What was the procedure attempted for the re-sync? I can't remember exactly how I did mine but I know you need two keys (one can be a cheap valet key). One then is left in the ignition with the power on but not the engine, the other is used to manually lock the driver door. That should sync it up.
At least I think that's it. Try locking and unlocking it a few times manually. Then the FOB should work.

I should clarify: The key you need to re-sync is the one doing the manual locking. Either a working fob or a valet key is the one left in the ignition.
