Check engine- Camshaft Position Sensor???
So I replaced my cam chain tensioner yesterday and now when I start the car it sets of the check engine light. The code is for "Camshaft Position Sensor- Open or Short to Plus". If I clear the code and drive it won't come back on, but whenever I start it it comes back on, any ideas would be much appreciated
My father seems to think I'm running too light of oil in it for how old it is, resulting in not enough oil getting to the tensioner. I'm using Mobil 1 0w-40, it's a 98 with 190k miles on it
All your threads you post points to a sludge issue, yet I dont remember you taking preventative maintenance. If you want your car to last you should think of replacing the oil pick up and maybe cleaning up the engine. Onwards, I thought you picked up a cam position sensor in your last ecs order?
I havnt taken preventive maintance because I, and the previous owner, have used 100% synthetic oil since new. It may be a clogged pickup tube, how do I check? And I did not get a cam shaft sensor, I got the valve cover gasket, cct, and valve cover gasket
I marked it with a sharpie before taking it off to ensure it was correct, and yes there were 16 links. But the check engine light came on right after I did it so I'm guessing it has something to do with it, just don't know what.
No. First off, did you change the sensor and just start the car, or did you actively clear the code? Can phasing can have an effect on emissions so a cam sensor failure code will not go away on its own - it has to be cleared with a scan tool. Second, after changing the CCT, did you hand-rotate the engine all the way back around until the cam alignment arrows lined up with the notches, and then recount the links to be sure there were still 16 between the points? When you set the chain, it can look like you have 16, but you won't know for sure until you rotate the engine and count again - I messed up my first CCT job that way. After spinning it over, I had 15. Had to reset it and try again.
Ok so I did clear the code and it came back on
And no I did not rotate the engine, but I kept the chain in the same place during installation,8 never took the chain off the cams.
And let me reiterate that when I pulled the old sensor off it was clearly broken
