Default Check engine light with no codes?

Greetings,

I am pretty new to Audi's, so please forgive my ignorance.

I have a check engine light on an 2000 A4 1.8 AWD vehicle. I plug in the OBD scanner and get nothing - no codes at all yet the check engine light will not go out. Does anyone have any idea where to start or what I should do next?

I am very sure the codes were not erased as I was the only one to mess with this.

Thanks for any and all help.

Use VAG-Com because it can scan more systems in the car than a normal OBD scanner.

Wow, $500 for scanner seems like quite a bit. Forgive the ignorance, but what does VAG COM do that a normal OBD scanner does not?

I am really interested in finding out the codes it is throwing today if possible. Any other thoughts on how I might obtain the codes somehow today?

http://www.alpha-bid.com/vagusb.html is what you need. For why to use VAG-Com, search.

I did actually go to AZ. Their scanner must be better than mine - it came back with P0411.

Based on my reading that could be anything from a vacuum hose to a secondary air pump.

I would appreciate any pointers on how to test this situation.
