Default Clanking noise @ idle

Hello all

I have a 01 1.8T tiptronic, new engine about 20k miles ago. Rest of the car has 72K miles on it. It was cold this morning (25 degrees) started the car, let it idle for a few minutes to warm up, put it in drive and a hear a clanking noise from the engine. Take it out of drive and the sound disappears. It went away after 5 mph or so.
Any ideas or comments are appreciated as i am a little freaked out.

First question to ask is:

Why was a new engine put in and where was it done?

More info: The noise is not a regular "clank clank clank" more intermittent.

We need some more info. "Clank" can mean so many different things, for example, my cat is clanking at idle due to a broken monolith. Can you get a vid with sound posted?

I have no way to post sound. i understand what you are saying about the type of sound. It is reminiscent of a belt sound. It does not occur when it is idling in park, starts when I put in drive (when it is cold) and dissapperars over 5 mph. after a short drive after the car warmed up, i could not duplicate it at all. Only when it is cold.

Unfortunately, that's really vague. Could be an engine noise, could be a transmission noise, could be a lot of things really. I'd recommend making an appointment with the dealer that installed your new engine for some diagnosis.
