climate control issue
I'm having a bit of trouble with my climate control. 2001 1.8T quattro
I already tried to scan it with vag com and I get an error message that says it cannot communicate with the controller.
When the car's on the recirculating light is always on, but none of the other controls work, and the backlight doesn't even light up anything on the unit except for the recirculating button.
I bought another used climate control unit, and when I swap them none of the buttons light up, and nothing works, not even the recirculating button.
I'm at a loss here and really have no idea what to do. I wouldn't really care seeing as the weather is getting warmer now, but since it's not working the defrost doesn't work and that gets a bit dangerous.
Any advice would be great, Thanks

Two CC heads and they're both dead? Unfortunately, you have to spend some time with Audi's cryptic wiring diagrams and start testing wires. Start by taking a good look at the plugs on the back of the CC head. Any corrosion or bent pins? Past that, I'd start with the pins that provide power, and the ground.
Well one unit at least has the recirculating button lit up, but the other unit seems to be getting no power at all which I find very strange. I took it to a VW dealer and they told me that the control head was dead and I needed a new one and needed it to be reprogrammed. I find it strange that both of the control heads I have would be broken as I've never heard of one of them breaking in the first place. So pretty much I think the VW dealership was just lazy and didn't feel like actually looking at it.
Anyone have a wiring diagram they could give a link for?
Also a DIY on how to program the control head would be awesome.

Thank you for the link.
I still can't communicate with the climate control unit.
I have another problem which i think is related. The a/c fan runs on high when the key is turned to the on position.
I installed a new a/c fan as the bearing in the old one was shot, new temperature sensor in the lower radiator hose, checked all the fuses in the fuse box, replaced the low speed, high speed, and load reduction relays under the drivers knee bolster, and replaced the resistor under the left frame rail.
Looking at a wiring diagram the only thing that I didn't replace is the a/c pressure switch, but I doubt that's the problem.
The problems must be related, but at this point I'm completely stumped.

1)Plug your VAG cable to the correct USB port
2)Right Click on My computer and select properties
3)Click on Hardware Tab and then click on Device Manager
4)Open up the Ports (COM x LPT) and then right click on USB Serial Port (COM X) and select properties
5) Select Port Settings TAB Click on Advanced Button
6)Change Latency Timer (msec) from 16 to 12
7) Click Apply & OK on all windows and close them.
You should now be able to access the HVAC module, via your vag-com cable.
