Clutch life?
I have a 97 Audi 1.8t and the guy who owned the car before me took good car of the clutch.. but I learned how to drive stick on mine 10k miles ago. How much life do you think the clutch has left? It hasn't started skipping gears. Thanks guys.. I'm debating selling my car just so I don't have to do a lot of maint.
It doesn't start slipping the gear. The disc will start to slip its kind of like a brake pad. We need to know how many miles the car has? Has the clutch ever been done? quattro or front trak? And also how long did it take you to get used to how much to slip. My guess is you probably didn't do a whole lot of damage unless your still getting used to it and slip it way way too much. I put a good 10-15k on my old civic clutch and I beat the **** out of that thing. Trying to spin tires in 2nd sometimes and just having tons of clutch slip. But the clutch showed no signs of abuse at the time when I sold it just grabbed like the day I put it in.
it has 112k miles on it.. it's fwd and it's the original clutch. I didn't do a lot of damage but it took me a good week not to bring hell to it. The car also peels out in 3rd gear.. it doesn't have traction.. even w/new tires.. i doubt that a clutch thing though. But the clutch only engages right at the end of the clutch pedal and it seemed decently used when I bought it. What do you all think? Also.. I never "burn" the clutch out.. by doing stupid launches.
It depends on how it was treated. There is really no common mileage for them to start slipping. Could be 75k miles or 150k+. How fast it takes from when it starts slipping to no grab at all also dpends on how it's driven. If you're careful it could last a long time after it starts slipping but then you're likely to kill the flywheel. No real reason to worry about until it happens. There is no way to know.
Depending on how it's treated, 75k-150k+ There is really no average because a car is never driven the same way throughout the course of different owners. If it was babied, well over 100k. If it was a spirited driver, closer to 100k. If they drove it like they stole it, less than 100k. But even people who baby their cars can slip the hell out of the clutch without trying to go fast or launch it, so it's really impossible to say. All you can do is hope for the best and drive it right. With a little luck and skill, you might get 150k+ out of it. The 97 I picked up had 170k and when I replaced the original clutch after 3 owners it was toasted, but not completely gone.
