considering an A4, anybody want to help??
Hey guys. I'm new to the forums and seriously considering a B5 A4.
I have been surfing the forums for the past couple of weeks and have noticed the majority of the threads titled "my car died!...need help" or "having car trouble...what should I do?" This was kind of unnerving to me. Any thoughts?
I am convinced that the 1.8T is the best engine choice for me. I want to do a fair bit of modding and create a handling monster. I would also like to get into AutoX.
Are their any 2.8 V6 owners who can throw some promising experience my way?
My biggest question has to do with problems to look for when buying. I understand that the timing belts are a weak point, but what else is known to have problems?
If you guys have other things that would be useful to a buyer, I am open to any suggestions. thanks

I own a 2.8 V6 and I have loved it since I purchased it last year.
You will do yourself right by buying a 1.8 if you do plan on modifying your ride. the 2.8 is a dead reliable car for me. I have kept up with regular maintenance and she has rewarded me. I have done what most others have and lowered the car and replaced wheel bearing and control arms. The last two are common replacement for all A4's.
It all depends on the car you are looking at....Audi's are just like every other car, they break down, especially at the age many of them are getting at. Also take with a grain of salt what you have read as all cars get driven differently. If you abuse the car, it will hit you in the wallet.
Look at service history if it is available. Timing Belt, Water Pump, Control Arms, Wheel Bearings, ABS Module are definitely things to inquire about.
There is much information in the stickies at the top of the forum that provide a wide array of information to educate yourself with.

Honestly, if you want to auto cross, don't buy an A4. Buy a Subaru Legacy GT (if you can afford it). The weight distribution of the pre-B8 A4s is absolutely terrible (and I'm not even convinced that the B8 is good enough). And being in CA, you don't really need the AWD afforded by Quattro, so you don't really have a use for an A4. I mean, if you think they're great looking cars or something then you can buy one and make it pretty good, but the weight distribution will always hurt you. (They are certainly good looking cars, especially compared to the Subaru Legacy, though.)

thanks for your input guys. I will check out those stickies you mentioned.
AutoX is something that I would like to get into, but it isn't a primary concern. I just want a capable performance car that is fun in the corners and a good all around vehicle.
