Coolant Question... I searched too.
I started my car up this morning and the Coolant Light started blinking at me. I knew that i needed to top off the coolant, but i popped the hood and it was below Min. Probabbly about a CM on the side of it below Min. I tried looking into it and noticed its the green looking coolant. Ive heard horror stories about mixing the coolants and it becoming the death of it. So what type of coolant do i need? And also After letting it warm up or driving it for a few minutes it goes away. Also sometimes it comes on under heavy acceleration then a few minutes later goes away. Is that the sensor? Or is it just reading certain temps at certain times. Also my Engine temp gauge hasn't gone over Half way to hot yet, so i think thats still okay. Any help woudl be great. I searched and couldn't really find the answer.
The fact that your coolant is green and not pink makes me nervous. Like he ^ said, the coolant that comes in these things is Pentosin G12. Made by the krauts. Supposedly if you mix regular-*** antifreeze with the G12 it gels up and then you're effed. What i would do is either do it yourself, or go have your coolant flushed. Don't just drain it and replace it, flush it and replace with G12. Do that and see if the light comes back.
I have to make a good length drive tomorrow morning and the light still comes on, I know the stuff in it right now is greenish, and i want to head to Napa and get some stuff to put in it. Someone said that i coudl run this until i flush it and put in the good stuff. Whats the green stuff called tho?
it doesn't have a set name, its just your basic ethylene glycol based coolant. other coolants like dexcool or yellow have added inhibitors and such, and G-series coolants are hybrids (which is why they can't be mixed). Technically you can put dexcool or yellow, but green is the cheapest anyways, so just go with that.
