Default Coolant temp and Oil temp guage don't move much.. normal?

Hi,

i just bought a 97 A4 and i'm wondering if it's normal for the oil temp guage to barely move above 150?

Mine reads like this usually..

My coolant temp guage usually only reads on the first line. Also normal or no?

You probably have gunked up oil temp and coolant temp. sensors causing slow and inaccurate readings. It's hard to believe that your thermostat would be the culprit of the low temp readings during the summer. It should read dead center. If you search there should be writeups on how to remove the sensors. My oil temp sensor is so gunked up it doesn't even move.

Would be best to replace the coolant temp. sensor. It's probably very corroded and not worth trying to clean. I think it's an $8 part at the dealer.

I don't think the thermostat is the issue. You could feel the upper and lower radiator hoses to see if they are equal in temp. to rule it out when the engine is "warmed up."

I would have purchased the coolant temp sensor and this.

well i figured the the thermostat is probably pretty old anyway. I'll try that oil sensor next if these two sensors dont work.

Neither of those will fix your oil temp. issue. Your oil temp reads what it should on a cold winter day. Good luck!

Yes you are right, sorry about that. I was looking at both parts and pasted the wrong link.
