Default double checking: "E" coilpacks with AWM

one of my coil packs is starting to fail at around 3k RPM under load so i was going to replace all four with the version "E" coil packs from ECS because the problem seems to get worse in rainy weather. ECS says that it works with ATW through 2001.5. my car is 2001.5 with AWM engine code. just wanted to make sure they will work fine before ordering them

and as a side note, the guy at the Local VW parts counter had never heard of the "E" coil packs...

They will work with any A4 1.8t 2000+ B5 and B6 since they all use the same plug.

He wont know it as the E coil pack. To him it is just the coil pack that comes on the 2000 ATW A4 1.8t and is made by Hitatchi/Beru. By far the best coil pack that Audi used on the A4 1.8t. Even the ndbw A4 1.8t guys are now starting to use them by doing a conversion to the 4 wire plugs and removing the coil pack controller that sits on their air box.

I still run these coil packs on my car making 630awhp. We also used them on the B6 that put down 426whp on 93 octane.

You can also get them from Purems.com and as a Purems dealer I can get them for you too.

Im going to replace all 4 at once. ECS can get them shipped to me with the seals and screws for $151.
what surprised me about the dealership was that even after i described how the E coilpacks were held to the head with two bolts each, he said that he hadn't heard of them and had only seen the revision R packs used. oh well. they wanted $160 for 4 Revesion R's so i said forget it.
thanks for the info. now i just have to figure out if i have the ZF or Koyo steering rack to adress that problem.

I have an oval shaped piece of aluminum fitted with a rubber seal gasket around the edge of it on top of my air box that has two screw holes in it but doesn't seem to have any purpose since no wires run to it. Is this my coil pack controller? Would this give me any hints as what and or why they removed the connection?

Can you get a picture of it? Sounds like where your ICM is supposed to be...

It sure is. Ive seen a picture of it. Pretty sure a previous owner did a ICM delete. Possibly even a boost upgrade hence my plugs being gapped at around .40

you go down on "boost upgrades" not up, they should be .028 if they are re-gapped. .035 is stock

Yes that is true if he is still running 1.8t coils, but if he is running FSI/TSI coils he can run the gap larger with some people running up to .044.

What year is your car? Because that piece is in all of the B5 air boxes but is only used for the ndbw cars that come with a ICM to control the coil packs.
