ECT Engine Coolant temp
I went to autozone to get see why the CEL was on and it said ECT (Engine Coolant Temp) circuit.
"Explanation; The engine coolant temperature signal is used for various systems in the vehicle.
Probable causes
1. Check connector and wiring
2. Sensor open or shorted-replace sensor."
Anybody know what all this means? the guys at the shop said to pick up some temperature sensor part or something I dont know. I was just relieved it wasnt the timing belt.

ecutuning.com I have to replace mine as well, keep in mind the sensor is either blue or green. I know my 2.8 take the green cylinder shaped sensor (there is also a square)....i think the 1.8 may take the blue square shaped but you should contact your dealer or ecstuning to find out.

http://www.ecstuning.com/stage/edpd/...tegory=Cooling about three qtrs of the way down theres a temp sensor section... or you can Ctrl+F 'coolant temp' and itll bring you right to it.
and dude, http://www.amazon.com/Volkswagen-Pas.../dp/1563924382 sounds like you might not have one.
its RIGHT at the back of the engine, it will be leaking coolant onto where your tranny bolts up. its held on by a connector and a C clip!

I just changed mine(also a 2.8) ...took about 30 mins,,part at the dealer was 35.00 and FYI I had a square plug....just make sure what one you have before you get the part.Buy the 2.00 clip that holds the sensor in too.
It is in-line behind the pass side cyl head..you can see the blue sensor in there behind the gray one
pic from a little farther out to show you somewhat where to look...can still see the sensor though
