Default EGR Valve

I change my oil on my 12v 2.8L '96 and every time i do, the check engine light comes on and stays on for like 3000 miles. i put in sythetic 10-30. when i get the code checked out its for my egr valve. i looked into replacing it, but its like $200 bucks. then all of a sudden. the light goes out and its fine until my next oil change. i checked the manual to make sure im putting the right oil in and it seems i am, so i wonder whats triggering the check engine light. anybody have any ideas?

I get a random EGR code sometimes too. Usually when i let my car sit for a while (anything upwards of a day or two). When i clear it its fine until the car sits again. Not sure?

Anyways unless the CEL really bothers you, a tempermental EGR valve won't hurt anything. Its mostly for emissions and might have a small impact on your gas mileage. As long as your car passes inspection (i dunno if you have emissions testing where you are) then i wouldn't worry about it until you have a spare $200 layin around that's burnin a hole in your pocket
