Default Engine noise after repairs - sound file included

I just had a bunch of work done on my 99 A4. I had a massive oil leak - to the point where the car turned off as I was pulling it off the interstate. I had filled the car with oil about two miles earlier. I got a new timing belt, new seals, valve head gaskets. The car has 205000 miles on it. My wallet hurts.

The car is making a noise during acceleration from 2k to 3k RPM. It's like a really rapid hammering. It doesn't make the noise past about 3k, and it doesn't make the noise really when I decelerate.

The sound is below. It starts at about 2k; I take the car to about 4.5k then decelerate. I'm in neutral.

Thanks as always for your help.

EDIT: Apparently SoundCloud can be a bit faulty. If you get an error when trying to go to the link above try refreshing the page. You can also download the noise here: https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B7zG...it?usp=sharing

Did you do the work yourself or did a shop do it? If a shop did it i would assume the work has some sort of guarantee and that they would have inspected everything before and after the repair to ensure further work was not necessary.

Have you tried pin pointing where its coming from with a friend revving the car?

Engine Codes? CEL?

Possible if its not engine related it could be your exhaust clanging around when the engine is revving up? Or a bad or loose mount somewhere?

Thats all the help i can offer maybe have someone else rev while you try to locate it.

Almost sounds like a heat sheild on one of the cats rattling. Which engine do you have?

Default 1.8t

I have a 1.8T. Taking it to the shop today to see. Am thinking they just didn't put something back right. Hoping it isn't damaged valves.

Went by the shop today. They are going to look at it in the AM. They suggested a rod knock. Thing is, the sound doesn't start until you get into higher RPMs. 3k+ when the car is in gear. Is that common?

My first thought was rod knock too, but the mechanic must've heard that and said something before giving you the car.

Okay - so I pulled the cords from the coil packs one by one. Still with the knocking. That would eliminate a rod knock, right?
