Engine Replacement
I am replacing the engine in my 2001 Audi A4 2.8 because the timing belt snapped and it bent some valves. I bought a 99 passat engine but when I looked at the codes the one one that I had is ATQ and the one I bought is AHA. What is the difference between them and would I have any problem replacing it? Thanks...
I know the tensioners that came stock on the 1.8T are too tight which causes your timing belt to snap or mess up. I had that happened to me and unfortunately I was going over 45mph which basically means it would cost more to fix the engine than to replace it. So I replaced the engine with another 1.8T engine. The only trouble I am having now is my transmission, which hopefully would only need a service around $200 at a german garage. But if, God forbid, I have to replace the tranny then I am ready for it I already spent close to $3,000 thus far in the past month. I love german engineering, I just dont like the price it comes with to own it. =)
99 uses EGR and does not have a secondary air pump/injection like 00+. There are other differences. You should swap the heads from the ATQ to the AHA and bypass the EGR system if you cant get it to mate up to the AHA head. If you tried to use the whole AHA engine you'd need an AHA ECU, main harness, 00/01 gauge cluster, and other stuff I can't think of. But here is what I don't get. Why did you buy an engine without making sure the codes are the same? and why wouldn't you just take the heads off and replace the valves?
I have been to two places already and both of them offered me the same engine. I went with the second one because it had everything I needed. The radiator fan on my car was bad so I was going to replace it anyways. I have 30 days warranty on the engine so if it doesn't work I can take it back and they get me another one. They were the ones that match the engine, I am not a mechanic and the codes, I got them doing some research. I am not the one doing the job but if you can help me out it would be great. You are suggesting to get the valves from the AHA engine and put them on my engine.
Note: I don't know how far is the damaged because we didn't take the heads out.

I would have taken the heads off to check the condition and see if replacing just the valves was possible before considering replacing the heads, let alone the entire engine. A bad radiator fan doesn't justify replacing the whole engine even if the heads were damaged either. Who told you that you needed to get a whole new engine without inspecting the heads first? This is crazy. If you end up having them put in that AHA engine, you better be damn sure that they have some kind of satisfaction guarantee and that everything will work, and that you will not have to live with a CEL due to the EGR/2ndary air pump difference. The AHA uses a different airbox and I think even the ABS, PS, Coolant tank, master cyl, headlights, are all different where the electrical main harness plugs in . They are a different shape/prongs, know what I mean? Honestly, I'd say return the engine and get your money back. Get the heads taken off your engine and have them/the valves inspected.
Well, hang on, I have an AHA engine and SAI. I don't know that that's helpful to the OP, but the two systems must be compatible.
