Exactly what oil to use? I get 5 different options

Hey guys, This is my first Audi and I have been searching, and I have
gotten results with like 5 different oils I should use.

Im hoping with some information you might help me figure out Exactly which
oil I should go with.

Mobil 1 synthetic ofcourse.

98.5 Audi A4 1.8T 5speed
102,xxx miles

Doesnt burn anything atall. And Oil Level has been PERFECT last 3,000 miles.

I don't drive the car that hard.

Temps here now that its spring/summer range from 40F* to summer 110F*

Which oil should I use?
Also, any of you like a specific oil filter?

I have a '97 A6Q and the person before me was using Mobil 1 10w-40 but I just switched it over to what I've been using for years: Mobil 1 5w-40. Now, I use to by this in gal. jugs at Wal-mart, but they ran out and now sell the 0W-40 Mobil replaced it with. However, this oil only has 1000ppm of ZDDP which is less than the recommended when the car was built. 5w-40 is also the Mobil 1 AUDI recommended until 0W-40 came out. I looked around and found Mobil 1 didnt actually discontinue 5w-40 but now sell it as '5w-40 Turbo Diesel Truck'. It's the same oil. This is what I now use.

What ever you do, look for a 'SL' or earlier oil (SH,SG) as the newer 'SM' oil has too little ZDDP and is usually not recommended for older engines.

ok thanks, I saw mobile 1 came out with the 0w-40? or something close,
and the big thing was it said, "INCREASE MPG"
So the "5W-40 turbo diesel truck" oil is what you use?

The name scares me. :lol:

Ya.. used the 5w-40 for years. Dont let the name scare you, it just happens to meet the 'new' guidelines for diesel oil which 'was' the guidlines for car oil. So when the 'new' car oil came out, they simply renamed it.

This is taken from Audi's Approved Oil list updated 7/2005 before Mobil discontinued the 5w-40 as a car oil:

Mitan Alpine RSL vollsynth. SAE 0W–40
Mobil Mobil 1 SAE 0W–40
Mobil Mobil 1 SAE 5W–40

Mobil Mobil Special X SAE 5W–40
Mobil Mobil Synt S SAE 5W–40
Mobil Mobil Syst S SAE 5W–40
Mogul Mogul Forte Racing Pro SAE 5W–40

And this is the Mobil 1 oil chart:

As you can see, the 5w-40 meets SM and SL specs becuase SL requires at least 1200ppm of ZDDP (Zinc). SM is suppose to be limited to 800ppm, but they can get away with selling 0w-40 with 1100 'cause they market it as 'European'.

However, if your still unsure, go with the 0w-40.


My book actually calls for SG or SH spec, so I really should be running the Mobil Racing 4T

i have an 01 a4 1.8t. would u recommend the 5w-40 for me as well.. i live in az were it gets very hot so would it need to b 10w-40?

Actually, the 2nd number is what you would need to be concerned about, the lower first number just means it circulates easier at start up, which is good. If you are worried about temps in the summer, you could go to the 5w-50, which meets the VW 505.0 spec. 15w-50 has more ZDDP. But its important to note that if your oil temps never actually climb above normal, you prolly dont need to go to 50. Mine hover right around 75c in winter, and and slowly climb to 90c during the hot months and 40 is fine. Oil temps above that and I would prolly go to 50.

What are you running now?

I've only had my A4 since Halloween of '08, and I've done 4 oil changes thus far. I changed it with Mobil 1 5W-40 first, and by about 2,000 miles the oil was black as night. I didn't like that so I changed it again, this time with Valvoline SynPower 5W-40. Car seemed to run much better and the oil stayed damn near perfectly clean for the entire oil change interval (I always change at 3,000 miles). Quaker State "Horsepower" synthetic didn't impress me at all, so now I'm back to the Valvoline SynPower.

I wonder if it was cleaning up crap left from the previous owner? Oil doesnt just turn black unless there's dirt, or you really heat it up - like to more than 400F for most synthetics.

SynPower is good oil too. The OP requested Mobil, so thats what I gave him. If he's open to others, then the Valvoline 5w-40 HST is a good choice @ 990ppm ZDDP. I like to stay as close to 1200ppm myself since the cam manufacturers recommend at least that level to prevent premature wear on flat tappet cams. Not sure if the 1.8t's have flat or roller followers, but my '96 2.8 has flat. Rollers can use lower levels after break in.

But thats my preference.

I was thinking that, too. According to their paperwork they only ever changed it with Mobil 1 5W-40, but (and I might be insane here) it just felt like the car ran more smoothly with the SynPower.
