Default Finally!!(i think) new tranny?

for those of you who dont remember my tranny went out around christmas and i havent been able to fix it until now (maybe) but i need to know what im getting before i can know for sure if i can get it... if that makes since. im going to do the install myself so im going to be looking around at junkyards. so heres what i need to know

1) i was told there are 2 different transmissions made for a 98 a4 fwd, correct? if so how would i find out which one is in mine? is it as simple as a part number? are they inter-changeable?

2) im going to be getting a new clutch too. ive looked at some places online but can anyone make any recomendations for a good place to find one?

3) ive done transmissions before but not on an a4 so is there anything i should know to make it easier or to make sure i dont mess anything up?

4) i know of a few places i might find a tranny here but if not is this something i could safely get on ebay?

5) is there anything else i should get or anything i should replace while im under there?

6) whats with the new forums? theyre a little weird? haha

well, I dont exactly recomend doing this yourself!
1. if there were than that means that one had different gearing!, they fit the same engine and the engine wasent changed unless your car is 98-01, than one is for 1.8 and another is for 2.8 those aren't interchangeable, for 96-97 they should be interchangeable, check with audi!
2. Ebay you can get them for about $200 shipped, Sach's, Luk, Valeo are all good german parts
3.you should really get a shop to do it! i got mine done by VW because if you dont take it out really really carefully, i was told that the tranny/ engine can get f'ddd up, i dont remember exactly what it was.
4. I Got a Quattro 2.8 Mt Trannsmission from ebay for $699, cant beat that, but it has a problem with 1st, it hums a bit, i might have to get it rebuilt in the future! carefull!!!
5.One Huge Thing you really need is Special tools, you cant use your convetional socket and wrench!
6.look at the bright side, we can actually post and read posts now!

each tranny has a tranny code just like an engine. it should be stamped on the tranny itself but idk where it's by. shokan would be your best bet for a used one. auditech79 should be able to tell you more about things

If you're building up for more HP later and want a better than stock clutch, I've heard good things about the DXD southbend clutches. Otherwise stock replacement is fine I guess (my stock clutch has 165K on it). While you're at it, check the tranny and engine mounts. I know for the AWD, the 034 steet density are recommended, and some have had problems with the ebay ones being crap.

i have a shop with a lift and everything where i can do the swap but if this is going to be a super hard job i might think about getting a shop to do it but i will still want to find the parts. i might just get the oem clutch because i dont think this car will be getting that much more hp... atleast not for a long time.

thanks for the imput guys hopefully one of the techs will get on soon and tell me a little more

Good luck man. I gotta say though.. If my tip ever takes a crap (more like "when") I will bury my car in my back yard and fill out a stolen vehicle police report.

Before you do anything major, I would invest in a Bently factory manual for the car.

If you have a lift it will be super easy. I took out my tranny on a slanted driveway with my car on short jackstands!

I dont know what special tool you'll need... just the 12pt bit for taking the axles off of the transmission. Check out southbend clutches-- www.dxdracingclutches.com and while you're in there get some street density tranny mounts and a jhm shift kit from www.034motorsport.com
