First Audi, n00b questions
hey guys. i picked up my first audi last week. 96 a4 with 92k miles. has a very clean interior and engine. new clutch 13k ago along with timing belt. k & n cone filter. everything else is stock. i have a couple questions for you guys (searched but came up with nothing much). my ln 2 code is coming up, and based on my research it is a maintenance reminder, but is there a way to figure out what exactly needs to be done? i already invested in a vag.com but its not here yet. and congruent to that code coming up, the check engine light came on. i dont hear anything or feel anything abnormal...should i wait till the reader gets here or take it in anyway? My climate control interface also goes in and out (i can see it, then i cant) will that be a fuse? or connection problems? half of my speedometer is also out, while the rest of my cluster is lit up. i saw that i could go to a dealer and get a bulb to replace it, but can i get the bulb at an auto parts store instead? (the closest VW/Audi dealer is a lot father than an autopart shop). nearing 100k what things should i pay closest attention to?
I have the same issue with my climate control, I changed the bulb and the fuse it just got old and keeps going out
as for the code can you post exactly what code it is. If you have an autozone or pepboys they will loan a vag to atleast veiw the codes.
the bulbs do a little searching online and you should be able to purchase the bulb for the cluster
explore the b5 stickys and have a fun stay on AF

those codes by the odometer are based on mileage, not the fact that anything necessarily needs to be serviced. There are ways to reset the light without Vag-com but most people just ignore it. search "service interval reset" and see what you find.
The first thing i would do when you get your vag com is clear all the codes and see which ones come back. Many times if the car hasn't been scanned in a while, there will be many codes left over from events that didn't trigger your CEL, and it makes it a lot harder to track down the one that did. The instrument cluster bulb is this little guy, dunno how tough of a swap that is though. Welcome to AF!

^hey thanks man. when i get the vag (im sorry is it pronounce vaj? vag like bag? or v.a.g.? lol) i will run the codes and post them up for some guidance. i will get to my autozone to see if they have that bulb and ill figure out how to change it out. im sure i can find a walkthrough here or elsewhere.
haha no worries man. i ended up needing these

they werent too hard to get out, the screw to remove the panel was extremely tight, that was the only problem i encountered. other than that it was simple

ahh gotcha. i think the one on ECS i linked you was just the bulb without the base. not sure why they even sell it that way lol. well glad you got it taken care of! as for your last question in the original post, 100k is around the time you start getting short on control arms, wheel bearings, that sorta thing. Has the timing belt been changed?
