wierd........mine always goes to empty and it always takes about 10 gallons to fill up. I know there is 6 more gallons in there, just don't know why it does it.

it's know as the erratic gas gauge. there's a level monitoring unit in the gas tank that monitors the level. if you lift off the carpet in the trunk, there's large circular cover with 3 screws on it that you can take off. once that is off you'll see the cover for the gas tank. undo the electrical harnesses and the 2 fuel lines. then take off the black ring looking thing but unscrewing it. you need a special tool to remove it but 2 screw drivers at opposite sides of it work too. once that is off you can lift the top off. if you reach your hand in the gas tank, there's only one thing stick out from the bottom. the whole thing is basically smooth until you get to the bottom there will be a bulge, it's just a clip so just push on the bulge and pull up. once you get the unit out, you'll see that it's works like a toilet, there's a thing that floats and then there's 3 wires i believe that senses the gas level. one of them is probably loose. also clean the the contact where the floating thing touches the metal on contact on the unit. pm me if you have any other questions. i hope you can do the job yourself and make sure you're low on gas before you do it unless you like gas all the way up your forearm.

to add to hiwords' advice, the fuel sending unit works on variable continuity so make sure the connection to ground is good. you can check the unit itself by reading checking continuity to ground as you slide the float up and down. That would let you know if it's a bad connection or the sending unit itself.

After driving Heartland Park Track last weekend, My guage worked fine until I left the track to go home. Guage went to empty, empty symbol came on, even though there was still half tank. Filling up did not correct. Is it possible to jam the float due to high speed track driving? Also, is the sending unit and pump on the 2001 A-6 one unit,or seperate? Thanks.

knowing audi it's probably the same configuration. there's no way the float could get stuck though
