Default Gear Ratios???

Does anyone know the specific gear ratios for the B5 A4? Manual and auto. Are they the same? Is the tranny in the 2.8 the same as the 1.8t I would assume so but I'm not so sure.

B5 A4 1.8t quattro manual

B5 A4 2.8 quattro manual

The manual transmission found in the B5 A4 1.8t and 2.8 is the same 01A bellhousing. They have different gearing though, but use the same 3.889 final drive.

Cool thanks that helps a bunch. Does anyone know the gear ratios for the Tiptronic just in case that should become an option for me.

Ok so here's my point now. If the auto (Tip) trans gear ratios are that close to the manual and the Tip can theoretically shift quicker than a manual where's the performance advantage in the manual?

Knowing very little about the Tip tranny, I'm gonna say that the advantage comes from when you shift. I don't know if you can adjust the shift points on a tip, but if you can, i'm sure its only a small amount. With the manual i would think you can get more outta the powerband by shifting when you want to, not when the tranny thinks you should. Plus manuals are just cooler lol

The automatic tranny has more drivetrain loss I believe. Also the torque converter doesn't grab like a clutch does and you can't launch it. If you look at the quarter mile times the manual is like a whole second faster.

Never even thought of that.. I wonder how much HP gets eaten up by the Tip vs the 5 spd?

the tip can theoretically shift faster but you need a program and performance torque converter. the 5 speed is a much cheaper way to achieve the quickness but it does depend on the driver

Roughly about another 5%. The other advantage for the manual transmission is actually being able to rev the car up higher when trying to launch the car hard.

BTW the TIP cant out shift all drivers, maybe the avg driver that shifts slowly.
