going to look at a 1998 audi a4 tonight
Drive it around, see if anything feels wrong and if the car sounds right to you. Ask if there were any problems and ask why they are selling it if its a private seller. Also make sure to ask if they changed the timing belt and if they could provide the paperwork.
You always take a risk when you buy a used car. Also maybe check the Carfax on it.

Check for the big stuff like these guys ^^ said:
-timing belt
-water pump
-if its the 1.8 check the turbo
Then look for little stuff:
-does the sunroof work EVERYTIME you try it?
-is there overspray in the engine bay? (often indicates an accident and a sh*tty fix)
-does it look beat?

they need to be changed every 60k-80k miles. a timing belt job is $300 for parts, $600+ for labor. figure that into the price of the car. if it hasnt been done, tell the seller that you want to subtract $1000 from the sticer price for repairs that are going to have to be done immediately after purchase.
if you let the belt go till it breaks, you are looking at several thousand $$ in repairs.
