Default help!... Don't know what I drained

So as my handle suggests, I'm not too bright. I was changing the oil on a 2001 A4 today- and I drained the wrong fluid.

It was the only drain plug that can be seen with the protective plastic still on the bottom of the car. It was located on a 'box' that was aprox. between the front wheels. It took an 8mm allen wrench to open, and I drained around 4 quarts. Fortunately I realized my mistake before trying to refill the car, but now I need to know what I drained and how to replace it. My guess is the differential? I'm clueless about anything thats not RWD...

Please help. It will be greatly appreciated. I can't explain how dumb I feel right now...

Tow your car to the dealer to have it re-filled, you don't have the tools to do it.

Transmission fluid? Really? I'm used to transmission fluid being red and having a very objectionable smell- do audis use some special fluid? This car is an automatic..

A4 tranny fluid is basically brown, we do have fluids that are red and even blue in the tranny but not on an A4.
Just tow it to the dealer, the trans needs to be filled from the bottom.

So I just read the procedure for replacing the transmission fluid here:

http://www.blauparts.com/audi/audi_f...on_fluid.shtml

and it appears the only tool I wouldn't have would be the pump- but that doesn't present an obstacle. I've got a screw pump kicking around the garage somewhere. Are there any other odd tools I may need to refill the tranny fluid?

You should use vag com to check the fluid temp as you are refilling. Alternatively, you could let the engine run for about 10 minutes to reach the specified temp. More importantly, you need to use the right fluid.
