Help me determine if this ecu is chipped?
So i bought this thinking it was gonna be a spare when i sent mine in to get chipped.
But it would studder when i punched it and the turbo spooled alot louder than on my other ecu. then when i got my chipped ecu it did the exact same thing. i eventually solved the problem by regapping my spark plugs to .028 when they were at .042. So could this possibly be chipped from the looks of it? I have yet to try it since i regapped my spark plugs so im doing that right now. Here are some pics. Idk why those tabs are on the outside? http://img541.imageshack.us/img541/6...810000940b.jpg Heres the inside, http://img17.imageshack.us/img17/6228/ecuinerds.jpg |
1)get boost gauge (you NEED one now that you have gotten chipped... you should have actually got one before, but it is mandatory that you go and buy one this week...)
2) answer your own question by looking at the boost gauge... if it goes above 7psi its a chipped ecu... if not, its not. have fun! |
i was just asking judging on the look of the ecu if there was anything that stood out.
Even if it was chipped how am i gonna find out who chipped it? |
00+ ECUs are bench flashed and do not need to be taken appart-and so there is usually a sticker on on the casing of these ECUs indicating it was flashed.
97-99 ECUs have a chip soldered in. You may have to take the casing off to see the chip. Do that. The chip should have a brand sticker on it. Based on the studdering thing, I'd also guess that it's chipped, too. So open it up, or put it back in the car now that your plugs are gapped right and see what happens. edit Woops missed that second pic... It does look chipped! See that piece of circuit board and chip on top that looks nothing like the rest of the ecu cricuitry? Try it out. |
Ok yeah its chipped.
The boost is pretty badass. I can't tell if i like my speedtuning chip better or this one. The boost for this chip is in midrange where i feel like on the speedtuning its lower. |
So now how can i determine who chipped it?
|
Read off the sticker on the chip
|
I just compared the two.
With this chip it drives fairly normal but when you floor it the boost kicks in. With speedtuning it seems like it matches the boost to where your throttle is if you understand what i mean? Its more like the boost is there all the time. Im taking it apart right now. |
Ok so the pink sticker reads: UP 787272. VEY
557P 96 OKT 72.72.98 And next to the sticker there is a M written in sharpie on it... |
under the sticker it says Intel Flash.
|
Intel is just who fabricated the physical chip. Tuning companies buy that hardware to write their tuning on. Like your usb flash drive- Kingston isn't the director of all the bbw porn on it. jkjk.
|
i personally liked the feel of my speedtuning over my friends GIAC. but i guess it was my own personal opinion. I would sell the other one (just to be safe) and write G.I.A.C on it in permanent marker ;)
|
Do most companies normally mark their chips?
|
All I know is my buddies 97 was chipped shortly after it was new by the previous owner, and there is no brand name on the chip in his ecu. All we know is that it boosts ~16psi. I'm sure that some are unmarked for fear of voiding the waranty.
GIAC put a big ol sticker on my ecu- "THIS ECU HAS BEEN BENCHFLASHED BY G.I.A.C." I think my speedtuning ecu was unmarked at least on the outside. |
Im guessing its giac...
Cause from how they described it thats what it seems like. and if thats the case i like speed tuning better i think. |
GIAC is way aggressive down low as opposed to up high. It blows it's wad way before redline, unlike some other chips that provide more linear and smooth pull to redline. The speedtuning "stage 2" chip that I had on my 97 was very compareable to GIAC as far as seat of the pants goes.
|
Ok well the funny thing is i bought it from this asshole kid for 45$ cause he thought it was broken and tried to scam me.
I just went and compared them both and this one pulls so much harder when you floor it. And the boost seems like it goes all the way to redline or like 1000 before it. i thought my Speedtuning chip was a sweet deal! ;) Also i wanna thank you onepoint8tee you always help me with everything. Your one of the most knowledgeable men ive ever talked to. |
Is there anyway i can tell?'
Like hook a vagcom cable up? Or should i just download the program switching tools and just use process of elimination. |
lol you got a $400 part for like 45 buck's lol it's like who got scammed now bitch!!
|
you might get the ecu writer with vag.... at least unitronics writes their "code" in the ecua dn you can tell it is theirs
|
Hmm, ill have to check into that.
Ill let you now. i get my vag-com cord tomorrow. |
Ok i have my cord and still have no way of telling who chipped it.
|
So i'm pretty sure it's not giac cause its not similar too speedtuning and the boost is steady till redline.
You wouldn't be able to tell its chipped unless you decided to haul ass. So that leaves Apr and i the cruise control switching tool doesn't do anything, so i don't think its Apr, So im thinking its Revo or some tuning company i've never heard of? I tried unitronics program and it didn't recognize my ecu so its not them. |
The cruise control switching for APR is only an option if you have multiple files- stock, chipped, valet. The unitronics program I think you are talking about is like lemiwinks or autotune- which is for DBW engines/ecu's only, and works even if you don't have a unitronics specific chip. It's just a supplemental tweaking program-which really has no use for most people. It's got to be a 1 bar chip or maybe less if it pulls steady like that. There's no way to find out anything about it with an obd2 cable being that it is an AEB engine. You don't have a map sensor so you can't even log boost. I'd give up trying to figure out what company made it.
|
hahaha, ok.
Well thanks for the help. Im just gonna assume its apr, or Revo |
