Default HELP! my 96 2.8 quat just broke down in RI, possible fuel pump. ANY ADVICE WOULD HELP

I filled up my tank in providence but made it 45 mins with no problem so i dont think the fuel i put in it is the issue

Before breaking down the car had this issue:
The fuel gauge worked fine until it was down to a quarter tank and then the fuel gauge would instantly drop to empty, car still has a quarter tank of gas in it. Fill her up, and the fuel gauge would go back up to full and then the problem would repeat itself after 3/4 of the tank was used up.

I have the day off and tools down here, car is in a safe drive way and i would like to fix it myself. Still a newbie hear to Audis/volkswagon but have worked on numerous chevys/nissans.

Anyway to test this fuel pump before I start throw parts at it.

ANY ADVICE WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED

gauge problems are your fuel level sender. theres a small wire that breaks just re-solder it and your good. as for the pump. unhook the fuel sender line from the tank cap and hook another line up that flows into a jug or bottle or container. turn car on does gas flow into the bottle? thats a good starting point. a relay can also be bad.

my tank is actually under the carpet in the trunk but same idea.

Thanks man, I appreciate the help.

Im good friends with the pervious owner and he met meet up with me and we pulled the cover off the fuel pump and started the car and got absolutely no noise from the pump, Pretty easy repair it looks like its on the way right now.

Is that wire that i have to repair easy too?
