Sorry, I had just put up a post asking for help... walked away and a friend decided to make a post of his own since I left it open. Every bit my own fault but he will defintly have it come back to him. I must admit, funny! hahahahahahahaha. Here's what I need help with.
____

First off I'll say I havn't much of a clue as to how to work on cars but I've been able to figure out some of the following..

I have a 1997 A4 2.6 that starts to overheat only when I have the a/c on. I've checked to make sure the fans are both working properly and they are. When I'm driving the car it doesn't have a issue and blows cold air. When I stop for 2-5 minutes at a light I'll feel ambient warm air from the a/c and the temp will start to rise. Any ideas on what to check next?

I assume that the next step should be to flush the radiator, check the thermostat, and then if all is good there change the water pump. Is that right or am I missing something?

Where excatly is the thermostat located on the car? pictures or diagram would help since I'm a idiot when it comes to this stuff..

Thanks in advance for your help!

I'm no expert on a/c and cooling but I'm sure someone else can help you out.

Thanks for the laugh.......

I'm too drunk to remember what they call that fan but it's the one behind the fans that actually cools the engine itself. should have a clutch on it. That'd be my first guess.

It's not either fan.. there are 2 and they both work perfect.

Any ideas where the thermostat is?

a coolant flush couldnt hurt. the thermostat wouldnt be related to only the a/c, the car would run cold of hot all the time if the thermostat was stuck open or closed. its not the water pump. you might just need a refrigerant recharge.

those are the same conclusions I'm coming to as well with the pump and thermostat. My only question is why would the car overheat only when the a/c is on??!?!? and only when I'm in traffic & not driving down the road...?!?!?!

You might have a bad fan clutch or slipping belt causing the mechanical fan not to push enough air or possibly a bad fan control module causing the electric fan not to kick into its high-speed mode to cool the condenser while sitting in traffic.
