If you aren't too concered about looks, interior quality/comfort or any of that superficial stuff.. the vdub is definitely the better deal. so if you're mainly looking for something that will get you from point A. to point B., will cost the least in the long run, and will get you more money 30k miles later if you decide to sell it, go with the passat.

If money isn't a big issue (if it is, you should be looking at getting a toyota). I would just work to add some more money to whatever my parents were going to throw in, to get something I liked all around. But if money isn't an issue, you aren't a car enthusiast and just want to take advantage of the opportunity your parents are generously giving you.. go with the vdub for reasons stated above.

wait a minute, before i get pounced on and thrown in the fire, i'm sure there are plenty of passat enthusiasts, in fact, i know at least one. i wasn't saying save up for an audi if you're a car enthusiast, i was saying save up for something you like all around no matter what type of car.. but if you just want to get from one point to another and spending the least amount of money (repairs, gas etc..) the vdub was your best bet out of the two.
by the way neither of the two you brought up are sought after much by enthusiasts, because there isn't jack **** you can do to either unless you have a lot of money.
if you want an audi, i suggest saving up for a 1.8t as well as having some "emergancy money" set aside (at least $1,000) for the unexpected problems you will have.

psh yeah the vw would get you from point a to point be... but even if something goes wrong with the audi just think about how cool you would look when youre broken down on the side of the road and how many cute girls would then stop to help you!
haha jay kaying... but that audi does still have a good 100k in it if you treat it right

I'd go with the audi. The satisfaction of ownership would make up for the cost to replace parts, and who knows it might even be problem free.
Besides any engine components that you do replace, either with OEM or aftermarket, are brand new parts. So you won't have to worry about them breaking again for a really long time.

u could make the passat way faster, but the a4 is such a nicer car. i'd get the audi, that 12v is reliable and you can save up for a nicer car, or drop a vr6-t into that a4 when it dies, and then you'd have the best of both worlds.
