Default High RMP on highway?

Hey guys,
I have an A4 99.5 1.8t, manual not-chipped or modified with 225/45/17 tires.

I've been wondering if it was normal that my RPM are at 2800ish at 100 km/h (62 mph).

That seems quite high and is the Turbo sucking more gas at those rpms?
Lastly, at what rpm's does the turbo kick in??

I'm currently doing around 20-22 miles per gallon..

Thx!

Thats a normal RPM at that speed. You definitely should be getting better gas mileage if you do a lot of freeway driving, do you accelerate hard.

The turbo doesnt kick in at a certain RPM really (it does boost more at higher rpms, but only at certain conditions), more of a certain engine load or throttle. You RPMs can be at 4 or 5 thousand but the turbo isnt kicking in necessarily, its when you are at more than half throttle or so when the turbo actually starts winding up.

Yea that's normal for rpms I was shocked and thought something was weird at first too. As for mpgs I get like 19-20 mixed driving.

Do the transmission make a difference?
I though manual transmissions get better gas mailage...

The gearing is different which is why you're seeing a higher speed at 3k than a manual transmission.

Gas mileage is determined by a lot more than just the transmission type and gearing.

I'm rolling 3600rpm at 80mph with a 5sp manual. I do about 80% of my miles on the highway at that speed and drive 'spirited' otherwise. Getting 26-28 mpg. The better gas mileage for a manual comes from using the power band more efficiently getting up to speed, not just the final top gear ratio.
