My car randomly displays high rpm and the motor just roars even when the car is idling. The rpm goes up to almost 2 and it stays there other times it stays at roughly 1.2
Any hints ?

mine does the same thing occassionally but its only as i am starting it up. wish i could give you more info but i havent even checked into it yet.

 

when its cold out, my car idles at 1200 rpms for a minute or so, then it goes back down to 800.

 

My guess: engine idle control valve broken... replace or clean.

 

Ricoxxx ..I did change the control valve...still same issue...I was told it might be related to some air input unit below the grear clutch...passing to much air into the motor...is this possible ?

 

Yr? Engine? Don't replace anything without verifying voltages and resistance first. Could be a vac leak, gunked up throtle plate, maf or something else. Got a CEL? Scanned for fault codes?

 

2.6 1996, will get no CEL ...will scan for fault codes.

My mechanique had the control valve and the coils changed and it still happens...it appears most when I am driving and the rpm is at 2 then I reach a red light I stop and step on break and on the gear clutch and the rpm just stays at 2 or 1.5 and it just stays there even if I remove my foot from the clutch.

 

Have you tried cleaning out the throttle body, or checking to make sure the airfilter is clean?
Any codes coming up at all?
