Default I have a problem and don't know how to fix it........?

Hello - I have an old 1995 2.4 A4 and its driving me nuts!

Its developed an issue which started a few months ago, at first it didn't happen too often but has recently begun to do it on a more frequent basis -

Basically when I turn the ignition the car will start up and rev briefly before the engine cuts off and dies - the problem is very intermittent - some times the car will fire up first time, some times it takes a few tries or some times it wont fire up at all but its always the same thing - the engine fires into life, sounds healthy then cuts off! But once the car has fired into life there is no issue, it runs and drives very smoothly.

I was thinking it could possibly be the fuel pump but I'm not entirely sure??

Thanks in advance for any responses.

Is it throwing any CEL's? I'd get those read before you do anything. After that, you can start looking into stuff. Things on a 95 are gonna start going sooner than later if you haven't replaced them already. That's why most of us use proactive maintenance instead of reactive it saves a bundle fixing a problem before it develops into something large. I'd suggest you learn to do the same.

even though you do not have a cel....you still may have a code stored...

have your car scanned if you have not already...

i've nvr seen a 2.4 a4, what country are you from? possible problems could be maf, ect, ICV or throttle body. try cleaning the maf and throttle body and change out the ect. check your plugs too.

Any diff between cold starts and warm starts? Could be the coolant temp sensor.
