It completely depends on your policy. You can call them and ask for a quote if you modify it.
When I wrecked my Jag X-Type, I had a polished steel upped and lower genuine Jag TypeR grill, polished door sills, and polished steel plate frames, all which set me back about $1000. My policy covered up to $1000 of "uninsured" stuff (stuff in or on the car that's not covered unless reported), so I submitted the receipts and was reimbursed.
On my A4.... I have a buttload more than $1000 of "uninsured" stuff. When, and if, I ever go BT, I will definitely call my insurance company. It's not worth it to play games with them or risk pouring thousands into your car if you aren't going to cover it. For example, if you put a $3000 into your car to BT it and you get nailed and the car is totaled, they won't let you take your parts. It will sit in a lot until the insurance company looks at it and then towed to the junkyard if you take the claim check.
Additionally, some companies can refuse to cover you if your car is lowered or modified and it's not reported as so. Messing with bumper heights and emissions controls is illegal, and some companies are sticklers for that.
Cover yourself. They can't raise your premium if you inquire about it. You'll probably find out there is a negligible increase in the premium and that it might be worth it to CYA.

If the car is totaled, most insurance companies will not let you remove parts. That $3000 turbo kit you installed could end up going to the junkyard with the rest of the pile. If you've ever been in an accident bad enough where you need to go to the hospital or late at night, you have no choice where your car goes. It usually ends up sitting in the tower's back junkyard, where you're not allowed to touch it unless to remove personal belongings form the car.
