exactly. why not go 2.0? i know where you can get cp stroker pistons for 120 a piece, so 480 a set. that coupled with a set of used rods, or at the very least i.e. rods and a used aba crank (for your setup at least), throw in some bearings and gaskets you could build a stroker motor for easily less than $2000 including the price of the junkyard motor. ive done it before, and plan on doing it again in a couple months. i already have a block and stroker crank sitting in the garage, all i need is pistons rods and odds and ends.

I know where you can get the rods for $240 a set and they come with ARP rod bolts. Yes they are China made but I know SEVERAL people that have used them in Honda, Nissan, etc and have NEVER known one to break. They are the 144mm 20mm style.

When I spoke with Eagle a long time ago about their rods and how they priced theirs considerably less they admitted they bought the parts "blanked" in China and did the finishing touchs here in the US. I would not be surprised if the factory they bought their blanks from was the same that this seller buy's his completed sets from. I have always checked the specs on the rods once I get them and have never known any to not meet factory size specs. I actually know a guy that seized a rod bearing on one of the D16 rods from this seller and it still did not distort which is almost unbelievable but I am the one that checked. The one thing that got me though is I have seen them used in 4G63T that has been pushed to over 500awhp and they are still going strong after 2 blown head gaskets.

Rods are actually something simple to make as long as you can resource good material and can be sold cheap with cheap labor.

LMK about those pistons though. I have a contact with a piston manufacturer and I could probably set a group buy up like I have done before but it requires at least 10 sets to be sold. The last time I did it they ran $225 a set shipped and they were 81mm and 20mm wrist pins (Toyota 4AGE). You could get them in 81mm, 82mm, and 82.5mm. I am sure I could get 83mm for the same cost. These are not made in China but here in the USA and by a very good Piston manufacturer. The cool things is I look up other pistons that are whatever size I choose to have made and have the ring size made to match for next to nothing. Say (strictly example) I wanted to run 83mm pistons and the CA18DET rings are $20 for a full set they will spec the piston to meet those specs. I think last time rings and everything got the total price down under $250 total. I actually still have a set if pictures would be worth anything.

i may be interested in a group buy of pistons. Curious why you use 4age pistons and nissan rings. Why not just buy pistons rings and wrist pins all made specifically for the 1.8?

I think you got lost in my post. I had a set of custom pistons built for a 4AGE motor back before I owned an Audi and owned a 4AGE. I think we used B20A5 rings for the larger size 82mm and 82.5mm pistons.

The point is to source parts that fit and are availible. So say I have 83mm pistons made they never made 83mm pistons in the 1.8t. I could have the pistons made to work with CA18DET rings since they are both cheap and availible. It is designed to keep cost down.

I know the FSI 2.0 are 82.5mm so I could have them made to fit those but then cost becomes a factor. Rings are pretty much rings. As long as you use a known good set designed for a boosted application you should not have any issues. However to get the piston manufacturer to also supply rings would dramatically increase cost since they have a specific supplier they go through and they would be a small batch set.

Oddly enough though 4AGE pistons are very close to working. Even closer then the B16 so it would not be difficult to make a set that works.
